A6 Bridge Closures Extended

Reform-controlled North Northants Council (NNC) are planning to extend the programme of closures of the A6 bridge over the River Nene at Irthlingborough.

NNC stated that the work was a phased re-waterproofing and expansion joint replacement of the reinforced concrete viaduct.

It had been hoped that the repair work would be completed during May 2026. However, the work required was greater than anticipated. There will therefore be an additional closure on Monday 1st June from 8pm, until Tuesday 2nd June, 6am.

Cllr Chris McGiffen, the council’s Executive Member for Highways and Travel, said:

“We appreciate drivers’ patience whilst we address these issues and remain committed to delivering a safe and durable solution that ensure this stretch is fit-for-purpose for many years to come.”

Cllr Martin Griffiths, Leader of North Northamptonshire Council, said:

“I appreciate this additional closure is frustrating for drivers and I would ask that everyone remains patient with us whilst we resolve this ongoing problem.”

Over the last year, the viaduct had become notorious for potholes that burst the tyres of road users.
