On Wednesday, 20th May 2026, Robin Underwood sadly passed away.
Robin had a long and illustrious career as a hardworking local councillor. He was elected to East Northamptonshire Council (ENC) in a by-election in 1996 and, at the time, was the only Rushden-based Conservative councillor on ENC.
Robin was elected as Chairman of the Council for the civic year 1999-2001.
Robin continued to serve on ENC until its abolition in 2021. During that time, he was the Chairman of the Resources Committee and subsequently, the Policy and Resources Committee.
When Rushden Town Council was formed in 2000, Robin was a Founder Member and he continued to serve on the Council until 2021.
Robin set a very high standard for others to aspire to. He was a perfect example of selfless public service. He was honourable, honest and hardworking.
He was one of the councillors who fought for Rushden Lakes and the thousands of jobs it would bring to the area to fill the void left by the departure of the Boot and Shoe Industry, (The photo shows Robin on the campaign trail for Rushden Lakes.)
Robin was a gentleman in every sense. His parting has left a hole in the community.
The flag at Rushden’s War Memorial was lowered to half-mast, as a mark of respect for Robin. He will be remembered and missed by all who knew him.
Deepest condolences to his wife and family.
