Tree Stump’s Second Life

Last year, the magnificent beech tree in Rushden’s Hall Park, collapsed. Attention was alerted when there was a loud crack, as the trunks separated.  There then followed a resounding thud as they hit the ground.

It could have killed people, but Rushden Town Council (RTC) had sensibly put a fence and an exclusion zone around the tree before it crashed to the ground.

Since then, RTC has worked hard to clean up the mess and make good use of the residue.

Contractors were called in to cut up the fallen tree trunks. They were turned into benches and placed around the Park.

The stump itself was converted into a raised flowerbed. A range of flowers were planted in it. Unfortunately, vandals have now pulled up the bigger ones, leaving just the flowers that are shown in the photograph.

The Town Council will undoubtedly replace the lost plants, but it’s disappointing that this has to be done.
