Rushden-born Peter Bedford MP was elected to the UK Parliament for the Mid Leicestershire constituency in 2024.
Peter has now been appointed Shadow Pensions Minister.
He started his political career by being elected to Rushden Town Council, one of several talented young politicians who emerged in the 2000s locally.
Peter was elected to East Northamptonshire Council in 2007 for Rushden Pemberton ward. He served on the Council until 2011 when he moved away to attend Leicester University. In Leicestershire, he was elected to the County Council before becoming an MP.
Peter still has links with Rushden with several members of his family living in the Town.
After his appointment as Shadow Pensions Minister, Peter said:
“I’m honoured to have been appointed Shadow Pensions Minister.”
“As a chartered accountant who spent 17 years in the private sector before my election to Parliament, I don’t take this role lightly.”
“Too many people across the country worry whether they’ve saved enough, or what retirement will actually look like when the time comes.”
“I grew up in a single parent family, so I know what it means to worry about money, and how much peace of mind financial security can bring.”
“My job now is to hold this government to account on pensions policy and to help build a system that gives everyone, whatever their background, the chance of a comfortable and dignified retirement.”
Nene Herald wishes this Rushden-lad well in his new position.
