On Tuesday 15th September, the Executive Committee of Reform-led North Northants Council (NNC) received a report about a draft Parking Strategy.
The report recommended going to consultation on charging for parking in most of the NNC’s town centre car parks in both Wellingborough and Rushden. Parking in these car parks is currently free.
The proposed charges for Wellingborough’s town centre car parks (the multi-storey and Jackson’s Lane) are:
£1.50 for 0-2 hours
£2.50 for 2-4 hours
£4 for 4-6 hours
£10 for over 6 hours
£1 overnight from 8pm to 5am
The proposed charges for Rushden’s car parks (Duck Street, John Street, Orchard Place, Portland Road and North Street) are:
£1 for 0-2 hours
£2 for 2-4 hours
£3 for 4-6 hours
£4 for over 6 hours
50p overnight from 8pm to 5am.
Parking would be free on Sundays and Bank Holidays.
The meeting of the NNC Executive Committee was lively.
Many speakers from several political parties and other local residents (including the MP for Wellingborough and Rushden) spoke in opposition to these charges.
However, the NNC Executive Committee voted unanimously to approve going to consultation on introducing charging in these two towns.
