Town Centre Aglow as Lantern Parade Kicks Off Christmas Festivities

Rushden’s town centre was transformed into a winter wonderland on Saturday evening as hundreds of residents gathered for the annual Christmas Light Switch-On and Lantern Parade. The event, which officially marks the start of the festive season in the town, was bigger and brighter than ever.

The evening began with a beautiful parade of handmade lanterns, crafted by children from local primary schools including Whitefriars and Alfred Street Junior. The procession, led by a festive brass band, made its way down the High Street, creating a magical river of light.

The parade culminated at the Town Square, where the crowd was treated to carol singing from the Rushden Community Choir. The honour of switching on the lights this year was given to local hero and long-serving paramedic, Alan Walker, who is retiring after 40 years of service. As he pressed the plunger, the town was bathed in a spectacular display of festive lights, met with a huge cheer from the crowd.

“It’s a true honour,” said a visibly moved Alan. “I’ve lived in Rushden my whole life, and to be asked to do this is just wonderful. Seeing all these families out enjoying themselves is what Christmas is all about.” The event, organised by Rushden Town Council, successfully captured the magic and community spirit of the season.
