Since it was initiated, Nene Herald has championed a campaign to establish a much-needed mainline station to serve Rushden and Higham Ferrers. As mentioned previously, Rushden is by far the largest town in England without its own working railway station.
There are villages a tenth the size of Rushden that have a station, e.g. Brundall in Norfolk (population 4,019) has two! This is despite Brundall being roughly the same distance from Norwich station as Rushden is from Wellingborough station.
If the former railway station at Knuston was reinstated, this would be of great benefit.
Contributing to NetZero
North Northamptonshire Council, and the former Northants County Council, have both declared a “Climate Emergency”. Meanwhile, the government is committed to achieving NetZero.
Renovating and re-opening the station at Knuston Halt can help achieve NetZero:
Many workers in our area commute to London to work. A significant proportion of those commuters drive down the A6 to Bedford to catch a train to London.
Some or even most of those commuters would switch to catching a train from the reinstated Rushden Station at Knuston Halt. They would reduce their drive by roughly 20 miles each day. That equates to around 4.4kg of CO2 emitted per traveller.
(The CO2 emissions from a gallon of gasoline: is 8,887 grams)
