Just before the local elections in May 2025, Cllr. Martin Griffiths of Reform UK was asked how Reform would remedy the poor condition of the roads.
The reply by Cllr. Martin Griffiths was
- Renegotiate the Kier contract
- Fully audit the councils spend on highways
- Scrutinise the contractor’s performance.
It’s a year later, and Reform now run North Northants Council (NNC) and Cllr. Griffiths is the Leader of NNC. On Thursday 2nd of April 2026, NNC’s Place and Environment Scrutiny Committee was told that the contract for highways maintenance would be extended for one year. The Committee was also told that service on highways was “passable”.This surprised some observers, given the number of potholes across the district. Perhaps it means that it is possible to ‘pass’ the potholes, provided you drive slowly enough.
