Reform-controlled North Northants Council (NNC) are planning to close the A6 bridge over the River Nene at Irthlingborough.
The road will be closed on the following dates:
- Friday 8th May 2026 from 8pm, until Monday 11th May 2026, 6am
- Monday 11th May 2026 from 8pm, until Tuesday 12th May 2026, 6am
- Friday 29th May 2026 from 8pm, until Monday 1st June 2026, 6am
- Monday 1st June from 8pm, until Tuesday 2nd June, 6am
NNC state that the work is the start of phased re-waterproofing and expansion joint replacement of the reinforced concrete viaduct.
Cllr. Chris McGiffen, NNC’s Executive Member for Highways and Travel said:
“We understand that full weekend road closures can be inconvenient, but these works are essential to protect the long-term safety and integrity of the Irthlingborough Viaduct. By carrying out the majority of works over a weekend, we are significantly reducing disruption to weekday traffic, commuters, and local businesses.”
“I would like to thank residents and road users for their patience while these important improvements are completed.”
The closure will force motorists to use diversions. The most accessible will be via Ditchford Lane.
There have been a series of dangerous potholes on the bridge. On several occasions, those potholes have burst the tyres of cars crossing the bridge.
At one point in January this year, it was so bad that the police closed the road.
