NNC Opposes Digital IDs

North Northants Council has passed a motion opposing the government’s plans for Digital ID cards.

The Labour government has claimed that Digital IDs are an “enormous opportunity” to curb illegal workers, but opponents see it as a threat to personal freedom.

A motion opposing Digital IDs was proposed at a meeting of North Northants Council by Cllr. Helen Harrison, the Leader of the Conservative Group. She said it would impact people’s day-to-day lives and potentially the services that NNC provided.

Cllr. Chris Munday, a Reform UK councillor, said: “The government claims this is about preventing illegal working.”

“As someone who works in the HR profession, I can tell you plainly it won’t. Those employers who choose to break the law, those who hire illegal workers, will simply continue to ignore any new system, just as they ignore the current one.”

The motion was fully supported by Reform, Conservative and Green councillors and was passed overwhelmingly.

LibDem and Labour councillors did not support the Motion.
